Governor of Darfur Urges the IRC to Help Release War Prisoners

Governor of Darfur State, Minni Arko Minawi, has called on the International Red Cross to exert efforts towards the release of prisoners held by the Rapid Support Forces militia.

According to a statement from the Darfur State government media, Minawi said: ‘I received a detailed briefing from the International Red Cross Director about the activities and services provided by the organisation in West Darfur State and the possibility of reopening their offices in North Darfur State to benefit from humanitarian aid and relief convoys.’
He added: ‘In addition to the efforts and roles played by the organisation in returning several prisoners to their families,’. He urged the International Red Cross ‘to exert more efforts to release civilian prisoners and civil servants who the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia in West Darfur State and other states has regionally detained.’
On another note, the International Red Cross Director presented his plan during the meeting to train cadres from the Sudan Liberation Movement and other factions of armed struggle movements in international law to protect civilians and international humanitarian law in coordination with the Governor of Darfur State.
Additionally, during the meeting, Abdul Baqi Mohammed Hamed, the Director-General of Social Welfare in the Darfur State government, presented a report on humanitarian work and the humanitarian situation in Darfur State, as well as the methods of response and safe routes for delivering aid to and reaching affected populations, especially in the states of West and North Darfur.
