Nyala – almohagig

The International Committee of the Red Cross (CRC) announced the killing of two of its staff members and the injury of three others by armed individuals in South Darfur on Thursday.

A statement from the CRC obtained by “Almohagig,” revealed the killing of two drivers from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the injury of three committee staff members when the team was returning from the “Lipa” area to assess the humanitarian situation for communities affected by armed violence in the region.

International condemnations escalated over the killing of the CRC personnel in South Darfur, with the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations, Martin Griffiths, stating, “The killing of relief workers in Sudan is unacceptable, and humanitarian workers should not be targeted.”

On his part, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, said, “They must be protected at all times… Humanitarian workers are not a target.”

Local sources told “Almohagig” that the Rapid Support Forces militia ambushed a team from the International Committee of the Red Cross on Thursday afternoon, and eyewitnesses confirmed that the team consisting of foreigners and Sudanese nationals travelling in four vehicles came under fire.

A previous report from the United Nations indicated that at least 50 relief workers in Sudan had been killed or abducted.
