A Major Power Station in Port-Sudan to Resume Operation

The Minister of Energy and Oil, Dr Mohi Eldin Na’im Mohammed Saeed, launched the resumption of operation at the Kounayeiib power station in Port Sudan after a four-year hiatus, during which significant progress was made. The total capacity of the station is 350 megawatts. The minister emphasised the importance of the project and the state’s interest in it, pointing out the directives of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and the state’s leaders, in addition to the Ministry of Energy and Oil and the electricity sector workers, in supporting the project. He applauded the concerted efforts that led to an agreement under which the Turkish company, CMI, the main contractor for the station, and other contractors from the Chinese company have returned to work.

The minister discussed with the representative of the executing company, CMI Turkey, in the presence of the General Manager of the Sudanese Electricity Holding Company, the General Manager of the Sudanese Thermal Generation Company, the project manager, and several engineers and technicians in the electricity sector, the importance of completing the work according to the outlined plans.

The representative of CMI Turkey, Said Shahin, said, ‘Today, we stand at the site to resume work after both sides in Sudan and Turkey reached an agreement to continue work after it was halted by Sudan previously.’ He affirmed the company’s readiness to implement the project according to the agreement, expressing the company’s sincere desire to continue the work for the benefit of the residents of the area and Sudan.

Shams al-Din Abbas explained that the station is designed to operate with three types of fuel: gasoline, gas, and crude oil, stating that the project’s time frame is 15 months, during which work reached 40% completion before the hiatus. The project is expected to be completed within eight months after the resumption.
