Al-Burhan: the AU Must Accept Our Conditions Before We Accept their Solution Proposals

Port Sudan – AlMuhagig

Sudan’s Sovereignty Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said Sudan’s confidence in the African Union (AU) and the solutions it offers is conditional on the AU restoring Sudan as a full-fledged member. This came during a meeting between Al-Burhan and a high-level AU Peace and Security Architecture delegation concerned with Sudan, led by Mohamed Shnibaz in Port Sudan, according to a statement from the Sovereignty Council.

Al-Burhan provided a comprehensive briefing to the AU Architecture delegation on the developments since the dissolution of the partnership between the military component and the political forces, which led to the failure to reach an agreement, stressing that what happened then was not a coup.

Al-Burhan briefed the African Union delegation on the political developments in Sudan since the Rapid Support Forces coup, its rebellion against the state, and the violations it committed against civilian citizens. The council’s statement said that al-Burhan expressed Sudan’s confidence in the African Union and what it can offer in terms of solutions on the condition that the state restores its confidence in the African Union by dealing with it as a full-fledged member.

Al-Burhan also explained that the basis of the solution lies in the withdrawal of rebel forces from the cities and villages they have occupied and displaced their inhabitants. On his part, the head of the high-level African Union mechanism delegation, Mohamed Shnibaz, emphasised the necessity of stopping the war and achieving stability for Sudan and its people, representing stability for the entire African continent due to its important and strategic geographical location. Shnibaz pointed out the African mechanism’s keenness and efforts to find solutions to the crisis, indicating that the mechanism listened to all Sudanese political forces.

In another context, the African mechanism met with a group of civil and political forces in Port Sudan. The political secretary of the Future Movement for Reform and Development, Hisham Osman Al-Shawani, said: “We all affirmed to this African committee our supportive stance for the sovereignty of the Sudanese state and our support for a national process to address the war crisis. We discussed with them the role of the African Union in recent years and its loss of identity in suspicious initiatives that do not support a solution in Sudan.
