Minister of Foreign Affairs: Our relationship with Tehran is not directed against anyone

The Foreign Minister-designate, Ambassador Ali Al-Sadiq, confirmed that the resumption of Sudan’s relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran is not directed against any other country at all.

He said in a special statement (to Almohagig) that after meetings took place between officials in the two countries, it was agreed to restore diplomatic relations between them to their previous state, pointing out that the severing of relations that took place in 2015 “was not based on an institutional basis.”
Minister Ali Al-Sadiq expressed his surprise at some people’s focus on Sudan restoring its relations with Iran, pointing out that there are other capitals in the region whose relations were severed with Tehran and were restored. He continued by saying, “There is nothing strange about this,” and stressed that the resumption of Khartoum’s diplomatic relations With Tehran, is a sovereign matter that concerns Sudan and that these relations are not directed against any other country, adding that what happened is a resumption of old diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Regarding what is being raised that Sudan’s restoration of its relations with Iran means its entry into the Red Sea region, the Minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Sudan is not the only country located on the Red Sea that maintains relations with Tehran.

Sudan and Iran recently decided to restore their diplomatic relations following meetings between officials of the two countries. It is noteworthy that the last meeting took place in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ali Al-Sadiq, and the Iranian First Vice President, Muhammad Mokhber, on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Summit, which was held in the Ugandan capital. Kampala, in which the two parties stressed the importance of coordination and joint cooperation between the two countries at the second level, as well as regionally and internationally.

It is worth noting that Sudan completely severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016, as the embassies in the capitals of the two countries were closed.
