Ramaphosa Calls for an Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa affirmed his dedication to promoting peace in Sudan after receiving comprehensive reports from Vice President Malik Agar Eyre, the Deputy Head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council. This followed their meeting in Pretoria, where Agar briefed President Ramaphosa on ongoing efforts to restore peace in Sudan.

President Ramaphosa, appreciating the information received, expressed South Africa’s support for dialogue among Sudanese parties. He reiterated the call for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the profound suffering and humanitarian crisis faced by the Sudanese people, especially women and children.

The presidency stated that the urgent need for South Africa’s leader to call for an immediate halt to hostilities emphasizes the critical necessity for stability in Sudan. The region grapples with persistent violence and chaos, heightening the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

In a forward-looking statement, the presidency revealed President Ramaphosa’s anticipation of a meeting with General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the Head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council. This indicates South Africa’s ongoing high-level commitment to contributing to Sudan’s pursuit of lasting peace.
