Foreign Minister-designate Hussein Awad arrived in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Wednesday. He had travelled from Banjul to participate in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit, his first visit to the eastern neighbour.

Following his arrival, the minister held discussions with the Minister of State of the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, Mesgano Oga, during which he emphasized Sudan’s deep-rooted commitment to the policy of good neighbourliness with Ethiopia, a commitment that is strengthened by our shared history and cultural ties.

The minister referred to the good treatment received by Ethiopians in Sudan, urging the Ethiopian government to treat the Sudanese on its territory in the same way, especially those who took refuge in Ethiopia due to the recent war.

During the meeting, in the presence of the Sudanese Ambassador to Addis Ababa, Al-Zein Ibrahim, the Minister discussed aspects of joint cooperation between the two countries and ways to support and develop bilateral relations and coordinate viewpoints in regional and international forums.

The minister also provided a comprehensive explanation of the developments in Sudan’s situation and the roles that neighbouring countries can play in achieving peace there.

The minister expressed his aspiration for a positive Ethiopian role in resuming Sudan’s membership in the African Union, highlighting the potential benefits this could bring to both countries, due to Ethiopia’s influence in the continental organization.

For his part, Minister Misgano Oga expressed his happiness at meeting the Minister-designate and thanked him for his keenness on meaningful and constructive communication between the two countries.

He also renewed his country’s commitment to stand by Sudan in this crisis, expressing his deep gratitude for Ethiopia’s past support and his hope for their continued cooperation, which is crucial for the resolution of this crisis and the return of security, peace, and stability to Sudan.
