Addis Ababa – almohagig – Mariam Absher

Sudanese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Al-Zain Ibrahim, discussed in two separate meetings the relations between Khartoum and Addis Ababa and the file of Sudanese refugees stranded in the troubled Amhara region, which is considered an area of security fragility, with both the Ethiopian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mesganu Arga, and the Director General of the Department of Refugees and Returnees in Ethiopia, Taiba Hassan.

During the meeting, the Ethiopian Minister stressed his country’s belief in a comprehensive peace process owned and led by the Sudanese themselves, referring to the efforts of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed personally in this field. During the meeting, views were exchanged on the current situation in Sudan.

The ambassador discussed with the minister the importance of strengthening efforts to help refugees and displaced persons due to the conflict in Sudan.

In a related context, Ambassador Al-Zain met with the Director General of the Department of Refugees and Returnees in Ethiopia and discussed with her the conditions of Sudanese refugees in the Komer and Awla camps in the Amhara region, and the suffering they face due to the security situation in the region and the poor assistance provided to them.

The two sides stressed the importance of coordination between the Sudanese embassy, the Ethiopian authorities and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to provide security and necessary services to refugees, including the possibility of allocating safer places for them.

The Ethiopian official, according to her tweet, presented her government’s efforts to provide protection to the two camps where the Sudanese reside, despite the fact that they are located in a fragile security area.

The Sudanese embassy in Ethiopia seeks to provide in-kind assistance to refugees in cooperation with voluntary and donor organizations, in addition to continuing efforts with the Ethiopian authorities and international organizations to alleviate their suffering and provide them with security.
