Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the International Governmental Development (IGAD) organization expressed deep concern about the escalating conflict in the city of El Fasher in western Sudan. He noted with concern its severe impact on an already fragile humanitarian situation and the serious threat it poses to the lives of innocent civilians.
Dr. Workneh unequivocally condemned the attacks on vital healthcare infrastructure, such as the recent assault on the Babiker Nihar Children’s Hospital, stating that such actions not only disrupt the vital medical supply chain but also impede the treatment of the wounded and vulnerable, including women, children, and displaced persons.
Dr. Workneh urgently calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to exercise restraint in accordance with international standards.
The IGAD Secretary stressed the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access to alleviate the suffering of affected populations and called on international entities to utilise their influence to achieve peace.
