The Committee to Protect Journalists said it has not received a response to emails it sent to the Rapid Support Forces regarding the arrest of Al-Ahram Al-Youm editor-in-chief Tariq Abdullah. The New York-based committee expressed concern over reports that the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces detained journalist Tariq Abdullah nearly two weeks ago and called for his immediate release.

“The CPJ strongly condemns the Rapid Support Forces’ detention of Sudanese journalist Tariq Abdullah and finds it unacceptable that they have not disclosed his whereabouts,” said Carlos Martinez de la Serna, CPJ program director. “The Rapid Support Forces must release Abdullah immediately and unconditionally and ensure his safe return home.”

Abdullah, editor-in-chief of the independent Al-Ahram Al-Youm newspaper, was taken from his home in Khartoum on 18 May to an unknown location, according to news reports and local newspapers.

A source who spoke to the CPJ on condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal, said that RSF soldiers stormed Abdullah’s home, searched it, confiscated his cell phone, and later returned and took him to an unknown location.
